- Visitors may drive on a home-country license. Residents, meaning people who live in New York with the intent to stay or keep a home here at least 90 days, have 30 days to get a New York license.
- Secondary guides say a non-Canadian foreign license usually means a written test, a 5-hour pre-licensing course and a road test.
- For an H-1B holder, guides list a passport, the I-797, an I-94 printout, proof of Social Security number and two proofs of New York residency. Without an SSN they say processing may take 1 to 4 weeks longer.
- The license usually expires when your lawful-presence document does.
