How to get a fab job in Boise

Boise has the most developed pipeline: a two-year apprenticeship with Micron and the College of Western Idaho.

The CWI and Micron apprenticeship
  • Two-year registered apprenticeship. Students learn the basics in CWI mechatronics classes, then get hands-on training at Micron.
  • Micron employs apprentices. Those who finish are hired full time as technicians. Benefits include competitive wages, health coverage, progressive pay increases and tuition coverage.
  • About 50 technicians had come through by April 2026.
  • August 2026. CWI and Micron opened a 60,000 square foot Micron Training Center less than half a mile from Micron’s Boise campus, and welcomed 27 apprentices, the largest Boise cohort so far.
Demand

Micron expects to need about 200 technicians for its new Boise fabs opening in 2027. The Idaho Department of Labor estimates statewide demand at 138 technicians a year, counting new jobs and turnover. CWI has also created a certificate to prepare process technicians and reports more than 140 students enrolled.

Not confirmed: application requirements and deadlines, which we did not find. CWI’s releases also number the cohorts inconsistently (fifth in February, sixth in August), so check cwi.edu.
