First 30 days near Boise

Idaho’s transportation department says 30 days. Some third-party sites say 90, but the state source wins.

License
  • ITD’s new-to-Idaho page says you need an Idaho license or ID within 30 days of moving, even if your old one has not expired. Third-party pages that say 90 days are not backed by ITD.
  • You surrender the old license, and may need to pass the Class D knowledge test. A skills test applies if the old license has been expired 25 months or more.
  • College students, active-duty military and their dependents are exempt while holding a valid out-of-state license.
  • ITD asks for proof of lawful presence, identity, Idaho residency and name, and recommends two proofs of residency.
